Salutary Neglect

How did the concept of Salutary Neglect effect the colonists and their eventual Revolution? Was this the biggest factor that lead to the Revolution or were there other more important factors? Explain your position.
The concept of Salutary Neglect was that the colonists were able to do pretty much what they wanted to. They had rulers that were not tight to the rules so they got use to the fact that they could do anything they wanted to. Then somewhere out of the blue a thing called taxes came up. They had not had taxes before and did not like them. I dont really consider this the biggest factor that lead to the revolution. I would say the French and Indian war was the biggest factor that lead us to the revolution. The British ended up broke after the French and Indian war and decided to tax the colonists. I think that the Salutary Neglect was a big part in leading up to the revolution but I think that the British being broke was the biggest cause only because the colonists probably would not have been taxed if the British did not go broke during that war.
The concept of Salutary Neglect highly effected the American colonists and was the primary source for the revoulution. This concept allowed the colonists to govern themselves and tax themselves as they saw fit. This ended, however, in 1763 when the sugar act was enacted. This act imposed taxes on the colonist that were voted upon by the Parliment, none of whom were American colonists. The colonists had been taxing themselves up to this point and were not opposed to taxes theselves but were opposed to the concept of taxes from a government body that had no American repersentation. The Parliment didn’t recognize the American’s issue and further agrivated the colonists which eventually led to the rebellion known as the revolution.
This neglect, however, was not just the only factor that affected the colonists feeling toward the crown. The French and Indian war ,which was fought in the colonies, was fought by both redcoats and colonists alike. This rekindling of two groups of countrymen provided an insight to what the other is like. Many colonists felt thier British counterparts were ignorant because of thier war techniques and the British felt thier cousin colonists were backwoods farmers who had no place in war. This allowed a schism in opinion on both sides and gave the colonists a new sense of identity of a nation, later to be called “American.”
I think salutary neglect was one of the largest factors in contributing to the Revolution because the colonists were not used to having rules and being taxed. They felt as though they were being used to the benefit of the Brits to get them out of debt from the war. For example the tea act. Although the tea was cheaper in America than over in England, the colonists knew that this was like a bribe to get them to continue to pay the other taxes they were being charged by the Brits.
Concept of Salutary Neglect effected the colonists and their eventual Revolution because from the time of 1688-1763 the colonists were left almost completely alone, the Navigational Acts were only applied loosely, no one to enforce it, they even started a governing system of their own. The colonists were not used to be told what to do. Until King George came along and all of a sudden started to stop the loose inforcement. The colonist didn’t like this very much, it angered them a lot. I believe that this was just part of the cause of the Revolution.
Another factor would be the taxes the colonists had to pay, such as the Sugar Act, Quartering Act, Stamp Act, and The Tea Act. The colonist believed in “Taxation without Representation”. They would have bought the more expensive smuggled tea then buy the tea was sold at a cheaper price even with tax. They felt that if they would buy all of the stuff with taxes on them, then that would mean they gave in. It was all about principles to them.
Salutary neglect effected the colonists and eventualy led them to revolutionize because they were so used to it. The British had laws for the colonists but never stricly enforced them at all. Salutary neglect is exactly that, letting things slide or pass. Even though Britan knew the colonist were trading with others they let the colonists because it kept them happy, and no real harm was done to Britan. When Britan started to enforce their laws and take away the so many years of salutary neglect, the colonists rebelled against the idea, as tensions grew so did the need for revolution and a break away from Britan. The biggest cause of the revolution was indeed the enforcement of laws and the lack of salutary neglect because the colonists had gotten so used to self rule. There were other factors though, taxes being one of them. The sugar act, the stamp act, all the acts passed by the British parliment to help restore funds after the French and Indian war, were taxed on the colonists. They were small taxes but the Colonists were used to self taxation. The main thing though was “no taxation without representation”. The colonists felt that Britan had no right to gain funds from them even though the British still protected the colonists and the colonists were considered british citizens. These two factors were the main cause of the revolution, the enforcement of laws against salutary neglect, and the taxes that followed the enforcement.
The colonists were so used to their own control of their land not some outside force, britain telling them what to do. When England started to tightin its grip on the Americas, the colonists felt that britian had done so little for them and now they all of a soon want control over them, they thought that was so wrong. I think that Salutary Neglect was the biggest factor that lead to the Revolution because the colonists felt so baddly at the British for “pushing the wrong buttons and the wrong time”. The Stamp act and the sugar act all had contibuting factors but it all comes back to the Salutary Negect because if England had started from the begining taxing them or having more control over them, maybe I wouldn’t be American.
The concept of Salutary Neglect affected the colonists because that was a period in which mercantilism, and taxes were loosely enforced. The colonists became used to it. So when this period ended, and mercantilism, and taxes were more strictly enforced, the colonists were enraged. They were used to having a lot of freedom, and were then told they had to follow all these rules. This really upset them. The period of Salutary Neglect would eventually be a contributing factor in the Revolution.
The biggest factor that lead to the Revolution was all the new taxes that had been imposed on the colonists: The Stamp Act, The Sugar Act, The Navigation Acts, The Townshend Acts, the “Intolerable” Acts. However, taxes were not the only contributing factor. There were other factors, such as the colonists’ belief that they were not British, they were something completely different; American. This sense of independence in combination with the friction with the Native Americans over the Ohio River Valley territory, also fed the fire to Revolutionary minds. The colonists were upset with the British government, when they refused to help them fight the Indians, so they could settle the Ohio River Valley, the territory they had fought and died for in the French and Indian War. But the British government was broke, so they could be of no assistance, causing the proclamation of 1763 which forbade any colonists from settling west of the Appalachians. The colonists felt that the British were hindering them more than helping them. These events and beliefs were big factors leading up to the Revolution.
Salutary Neglect was imposed on the colonists to help them flourish as colonies by trying to avoid strict parliament law enforcement. However King George III ended the law by creating the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act. By imposing these taxes, the colonists felt the need to rebel and break from the ties of England thus leading to their eventual revolution. I think the biggest factor leading up to the colonies’ revolution was the “No taxation without representation,” which mean taxing the colonists and their representation in parliament. If they had no say in Parliament, they wanted to run themselves, not by Britain and its Sugar and Stamp Acts.
Salutary Neglect effected the colonists and their eventual Revolution, in tha fact that befor King George III the colonists had almost no law from the british crown and the few that they did have were not enforced that good. But after the French and Indian war the British government needed money and they thought that the colonists needed to pay for some of the bill from the war. Because of this they start passing law and acts like the stamp act and sugar act, they also started to enforce the old laws. And since the colonists had had Salutary Neglect for about the past 80 years, the generation that was now living in the American colonies was not used to so much input and laws from the British crown they got mad and the Revolution started. But the removal of Salutary Neglect was not the only important resson for the start of the Revolution, the colonist were also mad because they could not move into the new Ohio valley, they were also tierd of trying to make a peace treaty or request to King George III. Even though Salutary Neglect was not the only reason for the Revolution it was one of the most importent, because if the colonist would have never had Salutary Neglect then they would have been used to the new laws and the strict enforcement of the laws, and they would have not needed to rebel.
Salutary Neglect helped colonists to their eventual revolution. Salutary Neglect was a time were the colonists were let loose and Mercantilism was not strictly enforced. This got colonists used to not having a tight authority above them. Once the period of Salutary Neglect ended and things started to be enforced once more, the colonists opposed this because it was a change from something they had gotten used to and liked. This played an important role because it had colonists in a more rebellious mood. I think this is a large factor but not the largest. I think a multitude of factors equally lead to the eventual revolution. I believe two of the other factors to be oppression by the mother country and the many taxes set in place.
Salutary Neglect was a major factor in the rebellion of the American colonist. During this time, Britain only loosely enforced the laws that they had previously enacted. This gave the colonist freedom to do what they pleased with their source of wealth. Salutary neglect allowed the colonist to become independent for a short time, so when it was taken away from them after salutary neglect was over, they were not happy to be under harsh laws again. Some of the legal actions that took place were, the sugar act, the stamp act, and the Townshend act. These were all used to force the colonist to pay taxes on common everyday goods that they bought heavily and needed. The stamp act, for example, placed a tax on any material that was printed. this effected a large amount of the goods that would typically be purchased on a regular basis by the colonist.Another act that effected the colonist in a similar way was the Townshend act. It also placed a tax on items such as paper, paint, and tea. The colonist reacted the same way to this act, as they did to the sugar act, and the stamp act. But why were all of these taxes needed? This was the time directly after the French and Indian war, in which Britain was in debt. they had lost their wealth by paying for the war, and in response needed a way to gain wealth back as quickly as they could. By ending the period of salutary neglect, Britain placed more restrictions on the colonist and taxed goods with out a fair reason. Thus came the saying, “no taxation without representation” The colonist rebelled by boycotting the British goods and at times becoming violent. The Boston Massacre occurred on March 5, 1770 between a group of redcoats and some local Bostonians. This was yet another example of how much unrest there was between the American colonist and their mother country.
Although salutary neglect was a factor in the rebellion of the American colonist, there were also several other factors that contributed to the rebellions that were occurring, including, taxes, and the French and Indian war which indirectly effected the rebellions in the New world.
Salutary Neglect had a major effect on the colonists and the Revoltion because salutary neglect allowed the colonists to govern themselves and when the British started to tax the colonists and govern the colonies from England the colonists got angry and thought of themselves as Americans not as British.
The concept of salutary neglect effected the colonists’ revolutions in a huge way. They were so used to having their own freedom and not having to listen to anyone, that when the government tried to “govern” them it became a huge problem. After the French and Indian War the British were in serious debt, and their plan to gain money was taxing the colonists’. In my opionion the biggest factor leading to the Revolution were all the taxes imposed on the colonists. The colonists did not agree with ” no taxation without representation,” because they had gone for so long, with laws and taxes so loosly enforced, they felt it was unfair and unjust to be taxed in this manner by the British government.
Salutary Neglect was the time period in which the colonists had very few laws enforced on them and Mercantilism was loosly enforced. Then in 1763, King George III enacted the Sugar Act and so on to the Stamp Act. The colonists were not used to the British Parliament taxing them and butting into how the colonists traded and who they traded with. With these taxes the colonist felt like they were not in control like they were for so long. They were losing money due to these taxes and they were not happy. So they rebeled against the taxes the British were all of a sudden enforcing. These rebellions later, led up to the revolution.
I think that the Salutary Neglect was one of the two major factors that led to the colonists revolting. The other factor being the French and Indian War. This War caused the British to become in great debt due to fighting over seas. Which caused them to end the Salutary Neglect era and begin taxing the colonists to pay for the debt they were in from the war.
During the period of salutary neglect, the colonists were pretty much on their own and self sufficient. They governed their own affairs with little interference with the mother country. They also were able to trade with the Indies and make a very good profit, compared to the small amount they earned off the British. They began feeling less and less like colonists from Britain and more like Americans.
When the british decided to attempt to enforce the Navigation acts after several decades of Salutary Neglect, the Americans resented it highly, and was one of the first and main factors leading up to the eventual revolution. While there were many other eventual factors, like the stamp act and the sugar act, and it can be argued that these might have been larger factors, the end of salutary neglect in such a startling and aggressive manner started the initial ideas of revolution in the minds of the colonists. It was the start of a long chain of increasingly strict laws that the colonists had no say on. If either salutary neglect never started, or it never ended, its quite possible to say we there might never have been a revolution, and we could still be British to this day.
Salutary neglect had a monumental effect on the colonist and their eventual revolution. while the neglect was taking place the colonists felt as if they were a part of Britain still in some way that they were together with them. However once the British started their new laws and taxes the colonies felt as if they were below the Britain and not like a sister country but a lower class all together. This was probably the biggest factor that led to the american revolution. I believe that if the Salutary Neglect wouldn’t have ended then we would still be under British control. I think the colonist all together as a whole felt as if they had their feet swept out from under them, that it was unfair to all of the sudden to have all of these new laws and taxes when the old was working well and the people were still happy. Instead they upset the people of the colonies in not giving them rights when before they didn’t care at all. Thus starting the colonist into an american revolution.
The concept of Salutary Neglect is that the colonists and Britian had basically stayed away from each other for several years. Each was running its own government, the colonies relying on their respective governors and Britian running on the crown and Parliament. The colonies were not totally free of taxation, but there was no taxation directly from the crown without representation. When the period of Salutary Neglect ended, the new king and Prime Minister George Grenville decided it was time to tighten the reigns on the American colonies. New laws and forms of taxation flew rapidly directly from the crown to the colonies. These “sudden” taxes shocked the colonists, who had until now been basically peacefully ignoring their British counterpart. But now the crown wanted their money and they wanted it now. This taxation led to rebellious moods in the American colonists, who believed that the crown had no right to tax them without representation. This was not the biggest factor that led to the Revolution. Several other reasons took part, but the most impacting was the attitudes of the British and Americans after the French and Indian War. After fighting “side by side” with the British, the Americans thought they were possibly not the brightest of men. After all, who marches into the woods in formation wearing red coats? The British, after witnessing the less than formal tactics of the Colonists, could not believe that they had had to stoop as low as they had when they came to defend the colonies and take back Fort Neccessity. This division among peoples led to the colonists seeing themselves not as British, but as something new- American.
I think salutary neglect was a huge factor in the rebillion of the colonists. They never had rules, they were never told what to do, and most importantly they were never treated as lower indiviuals. They had their own rights it seemed like but the English took it away and I think that was one of the smaller factors of the revolution. The colonists were not expecting to finally be the center of attention and England used their American colonies as their baby country to make money for them through mercantilism. The colonists soon caught on and were very unhappy, then the English springed something even worse, TAXES. The colonists were livid and were extremely upset they had to pay an extra tax, to have a cup of tea with sugar, or mail a letter. It was absolutely ridiculous, the colonists of course lashed out and I believe that was the major factor that started the revolution, was the beginning of unfair taxation and taking away the colonists rights.
Salutary Neglect was when the British tried to enforce their morals and rules in the colonies. But the colonies did not like that taking that the British hadn’t been there to enforce their laws since day one. So when the British started putting laws and taxes on the colonies, the colonies began to rebel. They rebelled because they were not used to having the British enforce laws and such on them. This is a prime example of mercantilism because the British assigned the colonies taxes that they hadn’t before. Salutary neglect was part of the rebellion but it wasn’t the only reason. The other reason was the French and Indian war. The war lead the British to start taxing the colonies because they were in debt.
Salutary Neglect was to me a very big factor that lead to their Revolution because they were so used to just doing what they wanted when they wanted. When Britian started to tax without representation the colonists were mad beacuse Parliment was the taxing the people for things they had never been taxed before. They were totally taken back at what the brits were trying to do to them. Also it didn’t help that not one colonist was in parliment representing the colonists which meant that they were being taxed wth out a say and although the tax was fairly low they were still being taxed and they were not used to being ordered around from someone who doesn’t even live in America.
